[ they have a... sword, how surprising. they look a little confused about why bas jumps so bad since they cannot see the piggy... their pouch is simply channeling datz with all of the apples. ]
I don't think I have anything either...
[ hmmm. they will pull out a letter as well and will peek at theirs. any important hints... ]
[don't worry your pretty little head, basilio, because actually this isn't a written letter at all. it is a map (except sketched out rather than fancy). nothing whatsoever is written on this piece of paper to indicate what this is for.
meanwhile, saber, yours is actually a letter:
Z
I've found more out about that "Nightsong." Apparently there's a wizard back in the Gate who will pay a king's fortune for the thing. It's in a vault in some temple in the middle of nowhere. I know your smugglers won't mind a little heresy, but be careful. That place is sure to be trapped to the hells and back.

as they check their inventory, there is a sound behind them like stone scraping together. on the opposite side of the hallway from the two doors, something that appeared to be only part of the stone wall has moved. another round, circular door has opened, rolling aside to allow them to step through.
it is very dark in that room as well, but they can look inside - it seems it is also lit by several glowing lamps enough that they can make out in the center of the room an altar. the altar is shaped like the statue of a scantily clad woman with a headddress covering her eyes and carrying the circular disc of the altar. in that disc is a glowing purple orb, seemingly about the right size for the circular indents on the doors. there are also two additional doors inside this room on the left and the right of the statue, though they do not have inscriptions and seem to be open. you can't see what is in those two rooms, but you could go into one of them and take a look if you wanted to.]
[ … turns the map upside down. and then the right way up again. huh. interesting. ]
How in the hell are we meant to get in there then?
[ he taps one of the doors with the flat of his axe just at the same time the stone scraping starts, and he jumps slightly and squints into the gloom again. ]
…
Oh.
[ oh. well. ]
Guess that’s as good a startin’ place as any. [ he’ll heft the axe onto his shoulder and head on over to the new door, pausing at the entrance to squint inside at the altar (lewd) and finally that glowing purple orb. wow. ]
[saber can approach the doors! no door is closer, so i am just assigning them right based on the dice.
to explain the layout of the room a little bit, there's the entry door you just came through, then the statue is in the very middle of the room. on either side of the statue, on the left and right, are the doors. they look identical.
also hanging around the statue are eight of those hanging chandeliers, which are hung from the ceiling of the room via chains. they are quite high up, even out of basilio's reach, but they still cast a dim purple light over the room. they are equally spaced in a circle around the statue, four on one side and four on the other.
saber, inside the right door, you see that it is a small room, no bigger than a prison cell, with a stone tiled floor. it is also lit by dim purple light. there's nothing in here but cobwebs, some junk (i won't stop you from looking in every box and barrel for loot but it's junk), and a lever hidden at the back.
[ that's fine. does it look like anything is blocking the lever that may stop it from being pulled?
either way, whatever the answer is, saber is going to go and quickly look at the situation in the second room in case there is also any secret levers on this side or anything that might yell out DON'T PRESS ANY LEVERS!!! to be safe. or maybe there's something horrible to the left who knows, saber will find out. ]
[the second room is identical to the first. the level is slightly hidden under the junk, but saber doesn't see anything in either room that would be reason for caution. it looks fine.
basilio walks towards the altar. as he approaches it, once he passes the ring of lanterns, he walks directly into some sort of invisible wall or forcefield. it slams into his chest with as much force as you might feel if you'd just done a belly flop directly onto the ground, and then tosses him backwards out of the room so he hits the wall on the other side. ouchie.
seems like maybe you cannot directly approach this altar.]
Careful comin' back over here. Don't think we can just wander over and nick that thing without somethin' else happenin' first. Or a really strong skin for blowbacks.
[well unfortunately saber rolled a one on checking for traps in this room and i didn't forget about that. it all looked fine to them, but as soon as they head deeper inside the room, they hear an ominous click, chk, hiss as they step on multiple trapped tiles. a dark, thick smoke begins to rapidly fill the room. it's choking. it has no smell, it seems almost like pure, concentrated darkness, but it burns as though it's poison, you can't breath in it, you can't see, and in the darkness you can now hear the sound of small creatures moving around you, squeaking ominously.
basilio tries to be careful, but also does not successfully notice the traps. the same thing begins to happen in his room, although perhaps the smoke is spilling out slightly less rapidly.
will saber and basilio still try to endure this and pull the levers?]
[ his ears twitch a little at the ominous clicking sound and-- well. it's bad, right? hearing a clicking sound in an ominous dungeon/temple/tomb thing, right? ]
Oi-- you hear that clickin' sound?
[ i mean he's gonna pull the lever either way, but he can at least try to be like ruh roh raber we're in trouble before he does. ]
[ WELL SABER HEARD IT BUT THEY'RE KIND OF DISTRACTED BY EVERYTHING HAPPENING IN THEIR ROOM TO RESPOND
the dice says that saber will try to endure it and pull their lever, but honestly the level of success here is up in the considering they are doing it while choking and also they cannot actually see where the lever is anymore. so. ]
[no it's okay. they can both pull the levers and then run out of the room. they will both feel the sensation of being bitten all over, hundreds of times, by small creatures with sharp teeth, and they'll be left disoriented, bleeding, and hurt.
but they both pull the levers, and the chandeliers on either side of the room descend to a height both saber and basilio can reach and can see that each is lit by a candle with a small purple flame.]
okay well, unfortunately bas will literally pause to lick his own wounds for a moment because good health care is important. that does mean he gets a moment to examine the lanterns while he’s doing this. hmm.
how hard’s it going to be to snuff this candle out with a quick puff of air? ]
they will also need a moment before they try to be useful. they will also wait to see if basilio dies horribly at the attempt to blow out one of the candles before doing anything to the other. ]
[ saber will wait to see if anything happens, and then wander over to the altar while holding the remaining candle, still lit. they actually did not witness bas getting yeeted across the room so they are going to try to walk closer to the thing ]

they glance back at the doors, frowning since these are probably important. ]
... hopefully it won't be difficult to get back here.
[ ignores that they probably just horribly jinxed this. but they tuck the letter back into their disgusting pouch and follows behind bas. ]
I can look at the doors, do you mind checking out the altar?
[
they do not wait for the answer they're just going to go and peek into one of the two doors. whichever is closest, if one is closer than the others? ]

[ he's sat up now like hmm. ]
Feels like I've heard somethin' 'bout this before. Somethin' 'bout a cloak of shadows and hatin' the light?
