[you are in a dark hallway, lit only by lamps overhead that glow with faint purple light. the light makes it possible for you to see the way ahead of you, but only barely. you are primarily in darkness. and there is also a sense in you that there is a time pressure here.

this place is peaceful right now, and quiet, but you don't think it is empty. you hear the sounds of movement here and there - probably nothing more than vermin, but you can't be sure. and more than that, there's a sense of something disturbed, waking up, beginning to take notice. are you trespassing? or is it?

you don't know. but the hallway you're in, the way deeper into it (or perhaps the way you came from?) is not lit at all, but cast in darkness, and whatever is awake is stronger there. you should probably not head back that way.

before you, in this hallway, are two doors. each door has an inscription carved onto a plaque on the wall beside it. you have both also received information from me about your goals and state of mind, so bear that in mind going forward.]

[ well. his instincts are flaring that he shouldn’t be lingering around this place, if something is waking up here. but he’s also aware that he has important things to be doing, so as much as he wants to just get it over with he can’t risk rushing into something and making a complete balls up of it.

especially not when he just got here.

anyway, he’s going to squint way too hard at these inscriptions and see if he can’t slowly work out what one of them says. is there anyway someone who’s, oh I don’t know, over 6’6” could take one of those overhead lamps down without too much hassle? so that he can have some more direct Light. ]

they are also up, and it takes a few moments to try to adjust to the darkness. is someone who is the complete opposite height of bas going to have any issues with seeing anything.

they glance at bas but don't say anything, instead just walking forward until they reach the doors. what do the inscriptions say yea.... HOW ARE THEY POSITIONED IS SOMEONE KNEELING AND SOMEONE ON THEIR TIP TOES ]

[so the lanterns are hung to the ceiling with chains. the chains look like they could be raised or lowered hypothetically - like maybe there's a mechanism for that somewhere - but pulling the lanterns down with your hands isn't going to work.

fortunately, there is no need! the light is dim, but because there are lanterns directly over the doors, the inscriptions can be made out. you do probably have to get close but they are positioned at a reasonable height to be read by tall and short kings alike.

the inscription for the door on the left reads: Her Most Vaunted Treasure

[ Oh, it's dark. This is really creepy, and she's clearly a little (read: very) nervous about this. Koharu stares down the long hallway for a moment, as if whatever is lurking down that way might lunge for them at any second. Nothing comes, though, and she eventually turns to glance between the two doors. (Are the inscriptions readable?) ]

Should we... check inside these first?

[if they are checking both doors, they will find that both are locked, but both would seem to have a mechanism on them - a round inset circle where you could probably insert something. it looks like a key?

saber, in your inventory, you have a weapon of your choosing (something useful, otherwise up to you) and a small pouch. there are some bloodstains on it, adventuring life is rough. in the pouch there is a single healing potion with only a little potion left in there, a potion of flight, some coins, forty apples, beer, a ring of keys but absolutely none look relevant to these two doors, and a letter.

the letter is also bloodstained.

bas, in your inventory, you have a weapon of your choosing (something useful, otherwise up to you) and a small pouch. the pouch is very dirty and smells like mold, adventuring life is rough. in the pouch there is a single healing potion with only a little potion left in there, a potion of invisibility, some coins, an entire pig's head, a moldy tomato, and a letter.

basilio now has one (1) axe. which is lovely. the pigs head startles him and makes him wildly fumble the bag for a second, before drawing it shut again. then he remembers the letter and has to awkwardly open it again and fish it out without making eye contact with the dead pig.

I’ve got nothin’ in here that’d fit either of those little round circle thingies, do you? Assumin’ you wanna go through here an’ aren’t just here for the atmosphere.

[don't worry your pretty little head, basilio, because actually this isn't a written letter at all. it is a map (except sketched out rather than fancy). nothing whatsoever is written on this piece of paper to indicate what this is for.

meanwhile, saber, yours is actually a letter:

I've found more out about that "Nightsong." Apparently there's a wizard back in the Gate who will pay a king's fortune for the thing. It's in a vault in some temple in the middle of nowhere. I know your smugglers won't mind a little heresy, but be careful. That place is sure to be trapped to the hells and back.

as they check their inventory, there is a sound behind them like stone scraping together. on the opposite side of the hallway from the two doors, something that appeared to be only part of the stone wall has moved. another round, circular door has opened, rolling aside to allow them to step through.

it is very dark in that room as well, but they can look inside - it seems it is also lit by several glowing lamps enough that they can make out in the center of the room an altar. the altar is shaped like the statue of a scantily clad woman with a headddress covering her eyes and carrying the circular disc of the altar. in that disc is a glowing purple orb, seemingly about the right size for the circular indents on the doors. there are also two additional doors inside this room on the left and the right of the statue, though they do not have inscriptions and seem to be open. you can't see what is in those two rooms, but you could go into one of them and take a look if you wanted to.]

[ he taps one of the doors with the flat of his axe just at the same time the stone scraping starts, and he jumps slightly and squints into the gloom again. ]

Guess that’s as good a startin’ place as any. [ he’ll heft the axe onto his shoulder and head on over to the new door, pausing at the entrance to squint inside at the altar (lewd) and finally that glowing purple orb. wow. ]

[well, unfortunately, you're not going right. both doors are locked. but there is a circular shape on the doors that suggests something could be placed in it and act as a key.

koharu, in your inventory, you have a weapon of your choosing (something useful, otherwise up to you) and a small pouch. the pouch has some teeth marks and stains like it was lightly chewed on by something, adventuring life is rough. in the pouch there is a single healing potion with only a little potion left in there, a potion of invisibility, some coins, a bowl of porridge, three suspicious looking homebrew potions with handmade labels on them that say "Missing Pets," "A Mother's Loathing" and "Insanity's Kiss," and a bloodstained letter.

to save time, the letter reads:

My reports show that the Nightsong is the key to his strength. Destroy it, and we may have a chance against him.


wis'adel, in your inventory you have a weapon of your choosing (something useful, otherwise up to you) and a small pouch. the pouch has some remnants of smokey smelling powder on it and looks a little charred, adventuring life is rough. inside the pouch there are a couple small bottles of something you know is called "alchemist's fire," this thing (it's heavy and big), some coins, three bottles of wine, and a letter.

Sorry, but I'm giving up on that thing. Whatever this Nightsong does, it's not worth setting foot into that cursed place. I'd rather face the spiders again.

[wis'adel and koharu can approach the doors!

to explain the layout of the room a little bit, there's the entry door you just came through, then the statue is in the very middle of the room. on either side of the statue, on the left and right, are the doors. they look identical.

also hanging around the statue are eight of those hanging chandeliers, which are hung from the ceiling of the room via chains. they are quite high up, but they still cast a dim purple light over the room. they are equally spaced in a circle around the statue, four on one side and four on the other.

wis'adel, inside the right door, you see that it is a small room, no bigger than a prison cell, with a stone tiled floor. it is also lit by dim purple light. there's nothing in here but cobwebs, some junk (i won't stop you from looking in every box and barrel for loot but it's junk), and a lever.

however, wis'adel, you also spot that there are some stone tiles on the floor that are slightly raised higher than the other ones, like they've been disturbed more recently than the rest. there is no way to walk towards the lever without stepping on them, though you could hop over them if you were very careful about it.

koharu, your room is identical, with the cobwebs, junk, level, and stone tiles. the tiles in your room look normal, though, nothing stands out.]

[ Well... Nothing terribly amiss here, aside from the lever.

With everything else seeming unassuming, the first thing Koharu does is wander closer to said lever to inspect it closer, careful not to break any of the miscellaneous junk underneath her foot. ]
