In a way. They're people who can tap into spiritual energy in objects, or in certain places where the energy gathers. They can see the future, they can read your future, and they can perform some pretty big things if they channel their energy.

Seeing and reading the future's new to me, unless you count fortune tellers and the like. [aka who knows if they really have the power or if it's a scam.] Are psychics commonplace?

Not particularly, but my entire family has those abilities. I grew up around it, so I was curious. About the differences, that is.

I see. Well, sorcery's a bit similar—its nature tends to be hereditary, so clan members are likely to all possess the same kind.

Does the rest of society know about it?

That makes sense. Does it ever skip generations? [ there's a nod. ]

Everyone in town knows. And people outside of it, too. They made a business out of it.

I'm not part of any clan or anything myself, so I'm not too sure.

... So kind of like fortune tellers, then?

[holyspirits]

Yeah. People can call for readings over the phone, but a lot of people come to the house to have their cards read instead. You can pick up a lot from a person's energy by meeting them face to face.

Sounds like a complicated business. I imagine you get all kinds of clients.

[holyspirits]

It can be, and we do. But I usually stay out of the readings unless I'm needed. I can't do much otherwise.

What was your part in them?

Sometimes my presence would help make things a little more clear for them.

I guess to use your example, I would be kind of like a blade. [ someone who is used to help harness more energy. ]

[slow nod because he kind of gets it but not entirely but it's fine]

Did you enjoy the work?

It's family. [ so yes and no. ] I like being needed even if I can't always see what they see.

I get that. No one wants to feel like they're not able to help out.

[holyspirits]

Yeah. I don't have their abilities at all, so it's the only way I can. [ pausing at another shop to browse. this time it's little seashell creations. ]

Part of why I said yes when God asked was because it didn't feel like much of a difference to what I was used to before.

Who could be? I'd never thought much about it before I came here, but if religions back home are to believed heaven is supposed to be quiet and immaculate. Wouldn't you get bored with nothing new to do after a while?

[he's silent for a bit because he has conflicting answers to this. on one hand, he thrives off being useful? on the other hand, years of depression doesn't give a shit, and also he didn't have a choice. but anyway.]

Yeah, it does get pretty boring.

I don't disagree. [...] I've just learned to appreciate that "boredom" can be a luxury sometimes, I guess.

Because sometimes it means that at least you're safe? [ if you have time and room to be bored, it means you don't have to be so on guard. ]

Something like that. I don't mind danger for myself, but these things don't exist in a vacuum.

[he's used to doing nothing. years of not wholly willing seclusion does that. it was for everyone's good, his own included, so he never resented it, but ultimately, it was also a gilded cage and glorified house arrest with no timeline for when he'd be free. if he wasn't so checked out of his life anyway, it'd have been torturously dull on paper. not allowed to leave, not allowed to have any contact with the outside world.

... and yet there's a lot he'd give to go back to that time, spending every day with the same people, the same familiarity. back when they were all still alive.]

I don't disagree. But the same can't be said about anything. Outside factors have a way of dismantling even the best scenarios. Even if I can see this place feeling like a vacuum anyway.
