[ what a wig. gamaliel does not outwardly react. then again, they don't have visible facial expressions. ]
Ha, yeah. Halloween is meant to be about spooky stuff. Ghosts and ghouls and what have you. [ they prod the pumpkin once more ] Also, kids eating a lot of candy.
The skeletons are fake. No bone rituals involved. [ they seem to think of how to explain ] It's an old holiday that started off as wearing masks to ward off spirits of the dead or something? That's also what the pumpkins were for. But with time it evolved to kids getting dressed up in costumes and going over house to house to get free candy.
[ a beat ]
Most holidays on Earth started off as a more serious religious thing and then got over-commercialized and left those roots over centuries.
Yeah. There's a lot of different kinds of plastic, but they're all made of the same thing, so it's not too different from metals in that way, I guess. I'm not a builder.
[ and it's useless to discuss they are just a nerd, but they laugh ]
A disappointment? Did you want real bones laying about?
Making me sound awful and macabre. I don't care much for human remains either, I'm just saying, it's a bold decorative choice. Intriguing. Whereas a fake skeleton is just... trying too hard.
Honestly, if you think that's trying too hard, you should see some of the haunted mansions people used to make. Paid actors pretending to be monsters and murderers while you walk through a house with a lot of fake spiderwebs and modified indoor lighting to make it spooky. [ they're not disparaging as they describe it though, at least not in tone ] Maybe that's the point. Turning something that would normally be actually scary into something you can laugh at instead.
[ they pick up a novelty animal skeleton on a stall, looking at it ]
Yeah. It was popular when I was a kid. It changed a lot once the world moved away from physical based areas, though. No one's going trick or treating online.
Uh. It'd be hard to explain since you guys don't even have working electricity, but think of it like people started moving their minds to another plane of existence. Physical bodies and existence slowly became obsolete because of that. Does that make sense?
It was the only way to do what I needed to. [ they pause at that and shake their head ] Or, well. I probably could give a hundred reasons, but if we're being honest, I think they all boil down to grief.
It did. [ they seem to believe it, at least? ] But for me it was about fixing something. I still don't think it's the kind of life I'd want to have. I'm just less likely to argue with other people about it now.

It's a bit odd, but very festive. So many bone creatures.

[she really doesn't.]
And because it's true on Earth, it's true here as well?

[ they go ahead and grab a skeleton and just. take off the arm and wiggle it around ]
It's made of plastic.

[like, what's plastic. but she understands that they're fake.]
Well, that's a relief, though a slight disappointment.

[she has no specific memories, but that does seem like something that would happen.]
Can I ask, is this a holiday where you're from?

[ummmm she knows chain lightning and she can be specced as a tempest cleric, thank you. obviously that's what was meant.]
It... sounds like something wizards would want to do. I sort of am attached to my physical body.

[ but shadowheart saying she's attached to her physical body makes them laugh a little, though it's not entirely. happy laugh ]
Yeah. Yeah, so was I.
