[NOT THIS TINY SHAKING YOUNG RABBIT. Lucas' stupid bleeding heart hurts over this, and he holds both of his FUCKING FURRY PAWS up in a gentle gesture.]
Please stay still. I won't let you die, but I need you to stop moving so you don't injure yourself any further.
[If he can, he'll approach and cut the wire with his knife because we work smarter and not harder in this economy. At least that way it won't string any tighter, so he can try to get the wire from around the little rabbit's neck without it digging in further.
He notes the other traps but that's a future Lucas problem. This lil rabbit has his full attention for now, he's trying to be as soothing as possible as he works.]
Why don't you tell me a little about your brother?
In the kitchen, there's a lioness in a red stained apron busy with cooking. She's cutting vegetables currently. Her kitchen knife isn't nearly as cool as Uruha's hunting knife. She turns to greet him. ]
Oh, not to worry dear. My husband must have left the door open again, hasn't he? [ she sounds cheerful. chop chop chopping that carrot. ] I don't know that I've seen people in a while, but I'm a bit of a homebody. Maybe my husband has seen them on his hunts. Why don't you tell me who you're looking for while we wait for him to come back? He shouldn't be too long.
[ Lucas is sooooo smart cutting the wire holding the rabbit before trying to free it. Good job!! The rabbit does seem to relax a bit at that, though the poor thing is still shaking as he tries to remove the wire from its neck. ]
My brother... He's nice. He always takes care of me. But he went to look for our parents, and he hasn't been back since. I came to find him, but--
[ the little rabbit's eyes dart to the cabin and its shaking intensifies ]
[well okay first uruha sneezes into his furry cat sleeve because he now has a COLD!!! from his mini-cyoa. but also he looks at this red stained apron... what does this red look like...]
Two travelers. A young sickly girl, and a swordsmith.
Yay though! Yahoo! He follows the rabbit's frightened gaze toward the cabin, frowning a little.]
...Allow me to cut the rest of these traps and then we can be on our way, alright?
[FUCK YOUR FLOWER GARDEN he is going to try doing that after he gets the wire from around the rabbit's neck, just a quick slash to the loop part so these traps can't work anymore. But he's keeping a careful eye on the house and keeping an ear on the rabbit, and he'll dart back toward the rabbit if anything seems to go awry while he's cutting. Otherwise he will just finish up quickly and move back.]
[ The red does look like blood. Or jam. It could be either of those things. Uruha's nose is too stuffy from his cold to smell what's cooking. :( ]
Hmm... We did spare some medicine to a traveler recently, but my husband's the one who sees all of those. He'll be able to tell you for certain if they passed by here. He went out to check on the traps. [ she starts to cut some mushrooms next. ] Would you mind checking on the stew for me, dearie? By the fireplace.
[ Lucas can absolutely cut all the traps. the rabbit watches him with wide, hopeful eyes as he does so, though it'll shakily point out: ]
I don't want to leave without finding my brother...
[ it doesn't seem too convinced it wants to stay either, though. There's no movement coming from the house as Lucas works. When he's probably about halfway through cutting up the traps, however, there's the sound of a twig snapping behind them. There's movement coming from the forest. As stated, Lucas darts towards the rabbit who cowers behind him, covering its face with its widdle paws.
A large lion dressed a bit like a lumberjack, with a hunter's knife at his side and a crossbow in his hands, steps out of the woods. He is immediately frowning at Lucas. ]
[A LARGE LUMBERJACK LION??? This might as well happen. Lucas will remain standing in front of the cowering rabbit and also hide his knife before the lion fully emerges (not me typing fully instead of furry help), trying to block its little shaky form from view while attempting to think up a good excuse when he frankly has no idea what the hell is going on here and why clothed animals are trapping naked animals about it.]
I was told by someone in town that this house was recently abandoned...? [LOOKING AT THE LION IN CONFUSION but also with some apology wow what a mistake.] So I was going to take some lengths of wire for my trip to the mountain. I'm so very sorry - I had thought it strange, but I assumed they would know better than I would.
[ He has to use the mitten to not burn his widdle paws, but Uruha can open the pot to look at the stew! Its delicious looking rabbit stew. It looks about done.
While he's looking into that stew, someone comes into the house. Their boots are loud on the wooden floor. There is a [aki voice] large lumberjack lion closing the door behind himself. He is carrying a full bag, stained and dripping with something red. He pauses when he sees Uruha. ]
You're not my wife.
[ He sounds more baffled than concerned, though.
The exact same lion, in a different area, faces Lucas. He tilts his head. The small rabbit is squeaking and harshly whispering behind Lucas, unaware that someone is trying to hide him from view and this is being very unhelpful. Luckily, the lion does not seem to notice it currently, despite the fact that he is still frowning down at Lucas. ]
He's gonna kill us...! It's not safe we gotta go we gotta go we gotta go!!!!
Is that so. [ while the lion's eyes do not dart to the rabbit behind him, they do note the little drips of blood from the rabbit's previous struggles. ] Where did the prey go?
[uruha's constant state of WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL IS THIS??? A NORMAL ONE?? A NON-NORMAL ONE??? WHICHEVER MEANS WHICH IN THIS CONTEXT???????? HAS A FURRY CRISIS. anyway, uh.
looks down to the stained bag. looks back up at the lion.]
This little rabbit is being so unhelpful and Lucas just reaches behind himself to try placing a paw over its mouth STOP THAT. But then he gives the rabbit a little tap as a warning as he starts easing back a bit away from the lion while keeping angled so the rabbit is still behind him.]
I cut my— [PAW? HAND?? HAND PAW???? BEANS??? LITTLE TOE BEANS???? HE FUCKING SPIRALS AS HE REMEMBERS HE'S A FUCKING FURRY AGAIN.] —self on the wire while I was trying to snap it. I didn't see anything else out here, though I did hear something in the woods a bit before you came back.
[ The lion drops his bag next to the door. It lands with a loud thud, and opens up just enough for Uruha to see a little brown paw. Looks like the bag is full of some rabbits. Who are now dead. They sure like rabbits here! At the noise, the lioness comes out of the kitchen, staying near the entrance of it with a wave of greeting. ]
Oh, honestly, darling, I keep telling you to skin them outside. [ tuts. ] We've got a visitor! [ the lion grumbles something about having noticed. ] He's looking for some people. What was it... A young, sick girl and...? Sorry, I forget. How's my stew looking?
[ The lion waits patiently for Uruha to answer both of these mysteries.
In Lucas time, the little rabbit is still making small noises of fear even as they back away. Look, sometimes. Children are the worst.
The lion raises an eyebrow. Why do all these animals have eyebrows. ]
You got injured? Let me have a look. I've got bandages inside. [ he sounds concerned despite his grumbly, wary nature. ] You shouldn't mess with people's property. It's dangerous.
[ the words dangerous makes the little rabbit cry out in fear, and the lion's ears twitches. He looks around like he is trying to find the source of the squeaking. ]
[HELP CHILDREN REALLY ARE THE FUCKING WORST SOMETIMES. Lucas loves them anyway. He will deal with figuring out the rest of this later even though he feels badly for lying to this lion that's sounding genuinely concerned, it's fine.
FOR NOW, HE POINTS WITH HIS FREE... PAW. AWAY FROM HIMSELF, OVER IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. AND ALSO RAISES HIS VOICE A LITTLE HOPING TO OBSCURE ANY FURTHER SMALL FEAR NOISES goddammit little rabbit.]
Ah! Wait, I think I saw something sticking out of the bushes over there—? Just for a moment, but it looked like something moved!
[ well, the rabbits aren't wearing clothes. so probably it's fine! they can't be anthro rabbits if jan doesn't know how to spell it! The lionness claps her paws together. ]
Wonderful! You can stay and have some if you want, dear, or I can pack you some for your travels?
[ the lion, meanwhile, strokes the bottom of its mane as he thinks ]
I did see them. Warned them about the beasts in the mountains, but they were the stubborn sort. They kept going forward.
[ on other side, the rabbit is still squeaking fearfully. God damn, child, it's like you don't WANT to live.
At Lucas' words, though, the lion does turn around towards the bushes, raising his crossbow and holding out a paw as if to protect Lucas. ]
What? What did you see?
[ No longer in the lion's direct field of vision, the rabbit immediately tries to bolt. ]
[URUHA'S KEEPING HIS EYE ON THE PRIZE AND LUCAS IS SO FUCKING DISTRACTED BY THIS RABBIT. He will make a fumbling attempt to grab hold so this rabbit doesn't accidentally draw the lion's attention but he only has ONE HAND BEHIND HIS BACK so it might be able to get away HE'S STILL LOUDLY TALKING REGARDLESS.]
[ the lioness looks a little disappointed, but the lion steps out of the doorway. ]
Oh, alright then. Do take care! The mountain's awfully dangerous these days. Isn't that right, darling?
[ Right when Uruha is about to pass to exit, he's stopped by the lion's large paw on his shoulder. ]
It's true. [ a pause as he keeps his paw there. ] I've got a coat outside. Near the firewood. Take it. Mountain's cold, and that girl didn't look too good.
[ that said, he will remove his paw. uruha is free to leave and either go towards the firewood and grab the coat, or continue on the path.
Meanwhile, the rabbit nearly slips away successfully, but Lucas manages to catch it at the last second and drag it back! It's a good thing, too, because that grab is the only thing stopping the rabbit from being skewered by the bolt the lion fired when he turned around as he heard the twig from the rabbit attempting to dart away. It impales the ground.
The lion looks surprise Lucas is holding a rabbit. The rabbit is now loudly crying, unhelpfully. ]
... What are you doing?
[ Very baffled for a lion who does not seem too bothered by the fact that he almost skewered a crying child. I guess it's fine if the child isn't wearing clothes? This is getting uncomfortable. ]
[CHRIST HE IS LOSING YEARS OFF OF HIS ALREADY SPENT LIFESPAN. At least the immediate danger of the rabbit getting impaled was avoided... Though now he's standing here very obviously holding a rabbit who is crying so loudly.
...
He just kind of picks the rabbit up football style and tucks it under one arm and then goes to yoink the bolt from the ground so he can hand it back to the lion.]
You seem very kind, so please forget everything that's happened here today. I apologize for the trouble. I'll be leaving now.
[ The coat is the size of the lion and made of fur! I suppose if Uruha is trying to figure out what kind of fur.... It's rabbit, of course.
Yay! +1 inventory.
The lion is just staring dumbly at Lucas as he does this. The rabbit is still weeping and starts kicking out all its little limbs when Lucas does not RUN AWAY as it is whimpering at him to do, but it's not actively trying to wiggle out of the football hold.
The lion does not seem to notice that the rabbit is crying. Or talking. He gaves it a cursory glance before shaking his head. ]
It's not a pet, you know. But I can spare a rabbit if you feel that strongly about it. [ he takes the bolt back. ] If you're planning to head to the mountain, it could make good bait for the monsters.
[ he moves on, boots trudging loudly, and starts setting up rabbit snares all over again.
The child in Lucas's arm trembles and whispers: ]
Is that what happened to my brother...?
[ Maybe it means monster bait.
Maybe it means that the clothes on the line aren't clothes drying at all, it turns out, but rabbit hides drying out in the sun. ]
[he does not have a good feeling about this so -1 inventory, actually. he puts the coat back and quickly leaves the house before hopefully the couple can ask wtf he's doing. IF A SICKLY CHILD IS ALIVE AND NEEDS AN EXTRA LAYER URUHA HAS MANY OF THEM.
assuming he can leave, he will take a quick peek at the garden.]
[He is at least polite to this lion that seems not to notice that this rabbit is wailing and talking, because the lion was kind to him... But with the bolt out of his hand, he'll readjust his hold so he's carrying the rabbit properly like a lattle baby. If the rabbit is looking at the clothes, he'll follow the glance and probably notice the hides, which is his cue to quickly turn so the rabbit cannot look at them anymore.]
Let's get you out of here. [Said softly, and he'll turn to head back toward the path after that. MENTALLY HE'S LIKE WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING HERE but he has a little child to soothe.]
[ FINE, DON'T TAKE MY COAT. I LEFT IT FOR YOU!!!! IT'S WARM!!! IT HAS POCKETS.
Anyway, nothing is stopping Uruha from leaving. The lions are happily in their cabin. The garden is full of vegetables, like carrots, lettuce, pumpkins (are a vegetable), potatoes (also a vegetable don't @ me), etc. There are some snare traps laid around the garden. It's just a normal garden. He can pick some vegetables if he wants!
The rabbit is now a baby hiding its trembling, injured body against Lucas's chest. The lion does not glance their way as they leave.
Continuing on the path, Lucas will eventually reach a place where it looks like the two split paths are converging again. It no longer looks like any particular season; it's just the regular forest once more. I guess he has to wait now. Or like. Keep going and ditch Uruha.
