[ yeah, that doesn't surprise them. but they don't call him on it. ]
Then maybe you'll see an improvement after all. [ airily, like they do not believe that in the slightest. but they decide that as much fun as it is pulling laurence apart, maybe... giving him something else to chew on may help him. ]
Think I had a bit of the opposite problem. All of my friends were people I swore I would never associate with, ever. And then they became the only people who mattered, even if I wanted to kill them half the time.
but oh, lore... he turns back to them, frowning. ]
Were you guys not always, er, angels? [ shouldn't angels have existed for so long and always been friends among themselves or something like that? ] What changed your mind about them?
Eight weeks is a long time, Laurence. [ think about what you've done, boy. but yes, lore. ]
We weren't born as angels or anything, no. Becoming a Guardian Angel came later. [ but it become a little more obvious why they mentioned this bit of lore. ] I had to be a little more honest about the fact I wanted to be around them more. I was curious about something they were doing, even if speaking with them went against everything I believed in.
I know that. [ he's thinking about it all the time why do you think he wants to go back!! ]
I didn't know that was a thing. [ BEWILDERING. he will ask more about that later. ] That sounds pretty dramatic, though - "against everything you believed in." Just talking to someone can't be that bad.
Some of you have asked, some of you haven't. It's fine. [ they are fine not talking about themselves, actually. but they scoff a little. ]
You've never met those types. [ they sound vaguely fond though. ] In theory, they should have been like everyone else around them, looking down their noses at everyone and thinking they're better than everyone with more money than sense. Impractical and nearly irredeemable.
[ but in practice, apparently they weren't quite like that. ]
Well... money's not really a thing in the Tower, anyway. Everyone's supposed to be equal there. [ except iris, apparently. ] What were they doing that got your attention, if they were that bad?
I've noticed. [ they do not really comment on the money thing, but that is a bit of a sticking point. ] They were looking for something... I guess you could call it a treasure? They'd been hunting for a little while, and when I heard about it I wanted in on it. Just to see if it was real.
Treasure...? [ sounds like something from a story iris was probably obsessed with once. ] Must have been something big if you had to deal with people you didn't want to.
It was. And... it was. We found it recently, just not the way we planned to. [ but they wave it off with a hand. ] It started with an idea to try and track the thing down, and we found a lot more than we anticipated.
It felt that way sometimes, too. [ they will just come out and say it. ] But I knew that going in. I wanted to come with them because they believed there was something almost supernatural about it. And I wanted to see for myself.
[ the question makes them hum in thought. ]
... in the end, it was a good thing because there was a conclusion to it. We all found what we wanted even if getting it was different than planned. So yes? [ even if they sound vaguely unsure for a bit. ] I like to think so.
Yeah. If things were still as dangerous as they were, I wouldn't be happy here at all. I wouldn't want them figuring it out alone.
[ they do not seem to mind discussing this though. ]
They had been searching for some time before I even met them. All of them had their reasons, but the one spearheading the whole thing had been at it for years because he needed to prove it for himself that it was real. [ it puts it lightly, but it's true. ] But you could say that, yeah. I grew up around people who are in touch with that side of things, but I never really experienced it myself until I met all of them. Not that they specifically had anything to do with it, but you know what I mean.
[ meeting them did not make the supernatural suddenly appear. they just happened to be searching and they followed along. ]
But you are now? [ ... ] Are they somewhere in heaven with you? Is that why?
[ if they're the only people who matter, can you really be happy if they're not here? ]
There was no guarantee it was real and you all just looked for it anyway? [ sounds kind of nuts for something that could've just been in their imaginations? ] What kind of things?
... I do miss them. [ take that as you will. ] But this job's just as important.
[ they are happy knowing their friends aren't in big danger, but they miss them anyway. how could you not when they're so integral to your life? ]
The one in charge of the hunt was very persuasive. I think he could have led us to the bottom of the ocean and we would have all followed anyway. We all believed in it, so we knew it had to be worth something. [ but they consider how to phrase this. ] Are you familiar with psychic abilities? Do some demiflora have those?
You'll get to see them again after this, right? Two months isn't that long.
[ this guy sounds pretty impressive...? laurence listens curiously, trying to paint a picture in his head. ]
Uh... Depends on what you mean by that. I don't think any of them can do stuff like read your mind or whatever - but Begonias can move stuff around with their minds, and Lilies can hypnotize people, so...?
We'll see what happens after these two months. Maybe if God does another trial period like this, I'll volunteer again. [ anything can happen...
also, they cannot hear laurence's meta but they would agree while also disagreeing because it would do no good to give that guy a big head. ]
A little similar. Ours are more the "see your future" kind. The ability to tap into people and see inside of them. That sort of thing. I'm familiar with that, but I wanted to see something else. I wanted to find something real on my own that wasn't connected to what I knew before.
Why did you volunteer? What are you getting out of this if you have to be stuck here instead of with the people you want to be with?
[ definitely cannot imagine doing this himself ]
Oh... I think that book said a Chrysanthemum might be able to do something like that - "reading your fate" or something. [ iris would never shut up about that book. ] What was this big new thing, anyway?
My friends would understand. And I want to be able to help, because I was asked to. And if I was asked to for different reasons than I'm usually asked for help I'd like to see if I can. That's all there is.
[ but he continues and they nod to that. ]
Right, same concept. We were looking for something that was meant to grant a wish.
[ not being successful and not being needed are touchy subjects sometimes, it's fine. ]
Hah. Very funny. [ but... what a question. ] Maybe plane tickets to travel for a while. Back then the wish was for them, and I didn't mind that as long as I could see it in action.
Oh. It's an aircraft that allows you to travel across the sky. [ they're fine explaining that. ] It makes it easier to get to places that are very far away.
[ anyway, now the fun part. ]
... it didn't work the way we thought it would. Things still worked out, but the method was different.
