Non-physical books - goodness, but the size of a library you could have. [ that would be incredible. ]
And I've got a little bit of everything, it seems! [ delighted, he pats his pile! on the top is a book about modern technology, and peeking out underneath that is a book with a fox lady archer on the front of it that looks handwritten. ] I think I could spend days there and never, ever run out of things to read.
Well, if you miss paper, there's hardly a better place to be than a library!
[ in taair's opinion, at least. paper specifically. there are so many books.
however, when they move on, he's happy to, too, and takes the book off the pile to offer it to gamaliel to flip through if they like - the wings on his back poof up, and every third or so word, there's a little songlike trill to what he's saying. excited bird. ]
This - I think of all of the books I've found so far, this is my greatest treasure. It's a book of tales from Vlder, a tribe that lives to the east of Iria. They are notably isolated, and most of the history that has been created on their people is created by outsiders, and the treatment of Vlderians by many of the other nations of Rodinia has been abhorrent.
But this, this is a book from Vlder. Their own stories, in their own words. I could hardly believe it! This place is a paradise.
[ they are thinking that the bird thing really fits, but they are also too busy looking through the bookpile to pay too much attention to the. feathery???? ]
So this is... sort of a rare piece of history from your world? From the actual group themselves. [ they look back up ] Had you been looking for that kind of thing back home, then?
Yes, and yes! On both counts! It's a treasure. My favorite kind of histories are the ones in the words of those who lived them - not from an outside perspective. It should help me fill out the Vlderian section of my history, at least a little bit.
[ he is so happy about this. visibly he is all poofy with feathery joy. ]
Their society is really interesting, even if it isn't my usual focus area. I hoped to meet a Vlderian one day, but, well. I've met Jiaoqiu, and Fidelio and Basilio, and they have their own fascinating, wondrous stories too, so, I certainly cannot complain.
[ they probably shouldn't reflexively say this. refuses to elaborate, focuses on other things: ]
Well, glad you found it! They let you take out the books and there's no deadline, so enjoy it. Do you study all of your world's history then? What's your favorite part of that?
"Furries"? Is that what they're called where you're from, Gamaliel...? Foxians, paripus, Vlderians, furries.
[ please don't
anyway thank god they asked another question ] - Ah, well, of course, Irian history is my favorite. [ watch the feathers on his back slightly brighten in color, because genuinely this brings him an unfathomable amount of joy. ] It's the centerpiece of my life's work. But... I do love to learn as much as I can about the rest, too.
Vlder's history is a bit like Iria's, in that there is not very much of it that's been written down in an accessible manner...or, well, there isn't to outsiders. In a perfect world, perhaps the Vlderians and Irians can settle into a period of peace, and it might be wonderful to meet their historians, should they have them. We could have such wonderful discourse.

Oh, yeah, we can carry way more books and information with computers than we ever could physically. I think I miss paper sometimes, though.

It'll stay open for the rest of your stay, so you've got a while to see how many books you can get still. What's this? [ gesturing at. lady archer ]
