they can't pinpoint where they're coming from, but it feels close. the sound is loud and stifling, almost enough to trick siffrin into thinking the insects have arrived and are slowly settling on their skin, slowing down their progress. the bottom is just beyond reach, but there are holds in the side of the cavern, little hand holds and footholes with a black, restless energy that wants to keep him from descending. so. any idea what you might want to do with that?
yves, meanwhile, can teleport right into the bottom. with a roll of 17, he actually gets to the bottom.
which is fine, because at the bottom is a large, bowled surface, a pit so deep with no other exit. and among this pit are hundreds of skeletons, all frozen in time.

But first, a deep breath in.. and out. Resting one hand against part of the wall they can reach out to the forest, work with them. Instead of this black restless energy, something light and helpful. Think of moss, vines. Chase away those loud stifling sounds for something more quieter, calmer.

One moment. [ he murmurs to marcoh, and he'll just like... open his senses a bit, hold out a little rope to the trees, so to speak. are they saying anything? warning for anything? he'll give over to the forest if he needs to for a little extra insight. ]
yves startles and the first thing he does before going to explore is looking up to see if he can see any type of visual on siffrin, and then calls out above: ] Siff! I'm down here! Can you hear me?!
[ like maybe they can do some sort of horrible game of telephone in the pit to let them all know they can try to drop one by one and yves can try to catch them? he's probably solid enough that they won't splat on impact? maybe? he doesn't know how big this pit is.
but after he does that, he'll go to investigate the skeletons. based on their shape and size, can he tell what they were? humans? adults? hopefully no small skeletons but :(? is he standing on the skeletons because they line the floor or is there some room so that he doesn't kick someone's skill around on accident? ]
[ marcoh is a strong and steady anchor, and as he grounds himself into the dirt to hold the rope, it's...strange. it's a feeling that comes, something almost like power and confidence strengthening the length of the rope itself. you want that rope to hold, so by god will it hold.
as jiaoqiu listens for the trees, he will hear the repeated warning not to wake the third sleeper. it's more frantic now, a hushed whisper, more curious and urging to be sure they listen. they seem to want you to venture onward, believing you must see the pit itself to find further answers. the trees also begin to speak...
"Make way for the Raven King."
that's new, isn't it? but who is the raven king? you also hear buzzing among the trees...like the hornets approaching.
siffrin hangs from the side of the pit, alone in their little catacomb-like holes. chainsaw takes flight, and you, siffrin, who have a deep connection to this forest, find that if they concentrate, the darkness of the hand and foot holds begins to fade, inky black giving way to soft green moss and gentle vines that hug along the wall. the process is slow, slower than you may like, but it's working. you may even be able to climb your way back up to guide your friends down.
as for yves, the pit is still just a little too far down for siffrin to hear much other than indistinguishable yelling. but worry not, perhaps your friends will join you soon. in the meantime, this pit is fucking massive. like arena-sized, nearly, twice as long as is wide, and all around are animal skeletons. horses and elk and cat and weasel, all shapes and sizes and even some extinct and mythical beasts. they reside in this pit, poised as if they're simply standing, frozen in time and unable to move on their own.
sort of like you, huh, yves? don't you also rely on the strength of others and their attention to you in order to carry on?
looking around, there are ferns and moss on the ground of this pit, and high, high above you can see little pinpricks of light and clouds. very unlike the tunnel you all came through to get here. there's enough room to walk carefully, though you may need to weave around some skeletons lest you kick them over. chainsaw lands on the head of an irish elk and caws. greeting? unease? who can say. ]
[ Slow is concerning, a brief wonder if maybe it's because of themselves but they chase that thought off. So long as Chainsaw makes it all the way down with ease, and while they could take the way back up to help guide - their attempts do still at that indistinguishable yelling from below.
Okay, well, maybe not. Just keep their focus on trying to make the descend for their friends as safe as possible to join them. It's fine, they'll be fine. also, now that you are in the pit, the creation of the holes into moss and vines begins to waver, and thick black masses begin to rise up. uh oh sisters. maybe think of what to do about that.

so - if the shadows are coming after them, he's going to lead the shadows off to get splashed on. it worked before! he only has so many things he can do!! ]
[ okay. siffrin is able to create some vines to stepladder their way up, but it's going to take some time to reach. it's not out of range, but it will be slightly slower than it was growing on the way down. poor yves is stuck, though the ground does rumble a bit around all four of them. fun!
the swarm starts to head straight for marcoh, but jiaoqiu distracts them just enough to begin leading them back toward the mountain pool. you know the forest. cabeswater knows your goal and the roots of the trees begin to part, a canopy clearing opening to pour in some light, but they're still gaining little by little.
marcoh, you have an option of waiting for siffrin or chasing jiaoqiu. siffrin, you have a choice of continuing to climb or wait with yves. jiaoqiu, you have a choice of trying to reach the pool, or breaking off into a separate clearing of trees to throw the shadows off the path. chainsaw soars overhead, but the shadows begin to follow her, too, some coating a wing and causing her to struggle. she's a fighter though, and she's doing her best to keep up with jiaoqiu and beat them back. ]
[ Well he did yank the rope up, so upon seeing no Siffrin at the end of it, he just curses a little under his breath. UNKNOWING THAT SIFFRIN IS COMING UP AS THEY WAIT, he has no choice but to go, right?? ]

in any case, jiaoqiu ignores marcoh entirely as he takes off, because the whole plan is to make sure his friends don't die or get hurt. he doesn't care as much about his own wellbeing. as chainsaw flies closer, he sees the shadows try to grab at her, and he whistles, sharp, to get her attention. she isn't his bird, but he offers his arms out to her anyway - come here, he'll protect you, it's okay.
he's not really made for running, but he does his best. as much as i really want to go into that separate clearing of trees, jiaoqiu is responsible, and he thinks the pool will help. water, right? water has to be handy here, like it was in the bathroom. guide him, trees. just keep the shadows away from his friends. ]
[ siffrin climbs, falling behind the shadows that are pursuing the other two but just enough that they're able to yeet over onto the topside with a little roll of the earth beneath their hands, almost as if the forest is rebelling. usually your control is better. usually the forest listens. but something is happening, and you don't know what, or why.
it gives you time to run to catch up with your friends, yves still at the bottom and jiaoqiu in the lead with marcoh on his heels.
the water, the water, get to the water. the shadows persist and they buzz loudly, angrily, in your ears and under your skin, and even as you reach the pool the water looks just as tranquil as ever, as if it isn't impacted by the shaking of the forest. the light from marcoh's flashlight casts a glow over the shadows, and it's then the three of you nearby see the furious fluttering of insect wings and the sharp pinprick of stingers jutting out. chainsaw dives over to jiaoqiu once she sees siffrin is following, and the three of you make it to the pool just in time. the shadows crowd around you, herding you into the water, but even if you try to scoop it up with your hands, even if you try to cast it over the shadows, it slips right through your fingers.
and so you, too, begin to slip. the pool is shallow, only up to your ankles at most, but you begin to sink...
and sink...
and sink...
around you, as the insects begin to land on your skin, some of them turn into vines thanks to siffrin's desire to keep friends safe. some of them break against marcoh's skin, something fortifying him from harm. some of them burst into droplets thanks to jiaoqiu's thinking, but it isn't enough.
as the water slips over your head and fills your mouths, all three of you hear the trees whisper again.

he's not really made for running, but he does his best. as much as i really want to go into that separate clearing of trees, jiaoqiu is responsible, and he thinks the pool will help. water, right? water has to be handy here, like it was in the bathroom. guide him, trees. just keep the shadows away from his friends. ]

it gives you time to run to catch up with your friends, yves still at the bottom and jiaoqiu in the lead with marcoh on his heels.
the water, the water, get to the water. the shadows persist and they buzz loudly, angrily, in your ears and under your skin, and even as you reach the pool the water looks just as tranquil as ever, as if it isn't impacted by the shaking of the forest. the light from marcoh's flashlight casts a glow over the shadows, and it's then the three of you nearby see the furious fluttering of insect wings and the sharp pinprick of stingers jutting out. chainsaw dives over to jiaoqiu once she sees siffrin is following, and the three of you make it to the pool just in time. the shadows crowd around you, herding you into the water, but even if you try to scoop it up with your hands, even if you try to cast it over the shadows, it slips right through your fingers.
and so you, too, begin to slip. the pool is shallow, only up to your ankles at most, but you begin to sink...
and sink...
and sink...
around you, as the insects begin to land on your skin, some of them turn into vines thanks to siffrin's desire to keep friends safe. some of them break against marcoh's skin, something fortifying him from harm. some of them burst into droplets thanks to jiaoqiu's thinking, but it isn't enough.
as the water slips over your head and fills your mouths, all three of you hear the trees whisper again.
"Make way for the Raven King."
and you fall through the dark. ]
