[he's dragged away and thrown in a cell. he won't be given any food, and he'll be left there alone for hours. how's he feeling?]

[ he did just kinda realise he probably did know the guy who just died in front of him and was willing to suffer so bas didn't, so he's like

[after many hours, a man appears outside his cell. he'll slide him a bowl of porridge. half eaten, and bland (probably the opposite fear you'd typically have) but it's something to eat.]

How are you feeling, Gloomfang?

[ he just kinda looks at the porridge and then back up at this guy who's just shown up with food. ]

... What happened to the guy on the altar?

[he's frowning. he looks worried, though?]

What guy? I don't really know what they had you doing.

Some guy they said was heretic. Wanted him punished.

[ ... ] Remembered his name for a bit there, like I knew him.

[she shrugs.]

There's no way to know. It all might have been a test? He might have been a stranger, but they planted something? I'm beginning to get concerned with how often they reset your memories.

[his care for you at least does seem genuine, even if it doesn't seem like he has any answers or ways to help you other than bringing you some food.]

[ other than not torture and maim the targets. still. mystery lad here's very concerned about him eating so, after a moment or two of thinking, he'll spoon some of the porridge into his mouth. ]

[but he just says this matter-of-factly, it's not a suggestion so much as an observation.]

[there's a sound of footsteps down the hall, and this man looks backwards.]

I should go. Sorry, but if they catch me, there will be a lot of trouble.

[but at least you managed to get a few minutes of friendly conversation and some food.]

[anyway, the next morning, he's brought to the mirror again.

same room, same tools, same lack of memory. different person on the altar, but still a stranger.

what does he do? will he still resist?]

[ ... at this point there's maybe a little bit of rebellion in there now. where exactly it's coming from is a good question, but it's nestled deep down there somewhere.

he goes through most of the same motions. selects a tool. gets up real close. doesn't quite go through with it. without someone yelling his name or outright telling him they're related though, he might get a cut in. but there's no intent to it -- beyond breaking the skin.

whatever he's doing, he's not out to cause agony. ]

[good to know. he can probably get away with that for a little while, before the girl wakes up. she also seems to know him, but she doesn't trigger any of the intense feelings of familiarity del did.

but eventually his failure to go further will get him punished again. hold on for part iv.]
