You see villagers gathered before their chief, clamouring for action. There are intruders on the island, they say. Sanctists, come to steal the divine relics. They must be put to death. The chief tries to calm them, explaining that the outsiders have done no harm, but they will not be placated. This is but the latest in a series of disasters.

They are right. It is time to perform the ritual.

... No. It was my intention to complete the ritual, but it did not go as planned.

Did... someone stop it?

[trifocal]

I... suppose that I did.

When I made it to the altar, there was something else there... Something that was not my god.

[configurer]

You didn't meet the dragon god. [ hm ] What was it?

[trifocal]

A human.

[configurer]

The--weird, giant monster ones, right?

[trifocal]

[ she nods... ]

This one had six arms and long claws...

[ normal human stuff. ]

It attached itself to our god, much like a parasite. And... dwelling in the altar deep inside our temple, it passively consumed the sacrifices that were offered to it.

[configurer]

That's. Gross.

[ first of all. disgusting. second of all, messed up. but: ]

So did you remove it from your god? Kill that one?

[trifocal]

Yes.

Of course, I did not have the power to do so by myself. I was aided by others, and by a strange guiding force that awakened a new power within me.

In the end, I was able to return the Dragon God Eht to its sacred vessel.

And that meant you didn't need to sacrifice anyone, right?

[ a pause ]

Wait, what guiding force?

[trifocal]

[ a nod. and then a pause. ]

It was very strange... There was a voice that spoke to me inside my head. It was not the Dragon God, but not the human, either.

It told me to choose a path, and... when I did, I was bestowed with a sort of ancient magic. An Archetype. With its power, I could wield magic akin to that which was used by heroes of legends past.

[configurer]

So... someone--something--gave you the power to fix it? Via magic. But it wasn't your god.

[ ... ]

Do you have an idea what it was?

[trifocal]

I don't. Perhaps it was a deity of a different sort?

[configurer]

... That could be it. Someone trying to help you out along the way without being too in your face about it. It sounds like the kind of deity I know.

[trifocal]

What sort of deities do you know of?

[ looking very interested in that. ]

[configurer]

Well, this God, for one. And then I've met another, and I know of one a lot of people would think of as one. The one I've met I didn't get to talk to for a long time. But they gave me a nudge towards a path I might not have taken if they hadn't said anything.

[trifocal]

That does sound similar! What were they like?

[configurer]

I didn't talk to them long. But... big? Ancient? The power they talked about was intense, but the path they pushed me on was one that was... good, I think.

[trifocal]

What path was that?

[configurer]

Well. By the time I talked to them face to face, I'd already gone on it. They'd given me a hint through someone else, first. [ complicated... ]

A hint...?

[configurer]

More like a time, really. I didn't know what it meant, but it was a start.
