Oh, right... [ a pause. and a small, self-conscious laugh. ] My apologies. You haven't met many mustari, have you? These masks are actually part of our traditional attire.

I've only met the one. [ you! ]

Where does that tradition come from?

It's been so long, it's difficult to say for certain. I believe they may be based on the divine relics... objects of great power, unearthed from the remains of a long-lost civilization. Such relics are a treasured part of our faith.

[personal profile] hotfixer 2025-02-25 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
So it's a tradition based on an even older tradition of unknown origin. That's fascinating.

Yes! Many mustari wear them all the time, so you really see more masks than faces around my village.

I've heard they are controversial in other lands, though...

Maybe seeing people's faces is more important in their cultures.

But that should be a small matter of discomfort. People should get to look however they want. Or wear whatever they want.

[personal profile] trifocal 2025-02-25 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I much agree. I think it would be nice if all the world was like that...

They can't even be upset about the origin of the mask, because it's too old for anyone to know.

Where I'm from is like that. A lot of people don't even decide to look human.
trifocal: (pic#17652674)

[personal profile] trifocal 2025-02-25 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
[ why would anyone want to look human.

... oh, right. human-people. ]

People can choose that much...? What else do they look like?

Most of the people like me still represent themselves as geometric shapes.

Others choose to look like animals, floating heads, mythological creatures, foods with faces... Aliens, robots, cartoons... I see all sorts.

[ looks at her hands...

she's trying to picture being a triangle. or a floating head. ]

Is it not difficult to live in such a form...?
hotfixer: (pic#17645241)

[personal profile] hotfixer 2025-02-26 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. They don't need to eat or sleep, and they can change their form at will. So it's no problem.

[personal profile] trifocal 2025-02-26 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Are they some kind of deities?
hotfixer: (pic#17645303)

[personal profile] hotfixer 2025-02-26 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
It makes for a convenient metaphor at times, but no.

They are just people given more control.
trifocal: (pic#17652674)

[personal profile] trifocal 2025-02-26 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
How? Have they mastered magic?

They uploaded.

All of their personal data was extracted from their brain and emulated in a simulated world, giving them the freedom to customize both their own selves and their surroundings.

Data from... their brains?

You could think of it like a mathematical calculation that represents their soul.

[ math lady meme ]

Oh...... okay!

[ does not sound like she understands. ]

They live in a simulation? And... you do, too?

[ for some reason tries to elaborate more instead of leaving it at that even though euphausia is struggling. ]

For conversational purposes, most code can be broken down into if-then sequences. Like when you order things from the kiosk. If you tap the icon for something, then you get that thing. Human behavior is the same, but on a much smaller, micro level of interaction, always moving and adapting to every factor in the present and the past.

[ stop. ]

But yes. I lived in a simulation.
