The ones I used to work under did. Doesn't mean we're contracted at the same times or for the same missions, though.

Oh. Well... What sort of missions do you usually do?

The kinds that take hitting 'em hard and fast, and making sure they blow sky high if they manage to escape.

[ they do feel more comfortable with her saying these things after finding out she works for an organization that genuinely wants to improve the world. ]

That does sound kind of cool. Like a spy.

But the kind in movies that blow things up instead of real ones.

Yeah? What do you think a "real" spy is like?

I suppose that it's subjective depending on the world you're from. So from yours, of course, "real" spies may deal in explosions.

Where I'm from, their greatest goal is to be unnoticed and leave no traces of their existence. So, no explosions.

[sarkazm]

We've got some like that too, sure. Intel gatherers and whatever.

What I take care of, that comes after the intel.

The dramatic escape.

[ they move to just stand by the window. ]

Will you tell me about some of your missions? I still don't know what sort of thing you really do.

[outside the window, the landscape is... well. it's pretty rough. jagged edges erupt from it here and there, coated in black crystal, and gouges in the land scar it; here and there, they can see the lingering impressions of what look like absolutely massive vehicle treads.

Ooh, how about this one. Our non-Sarkaz squadmate infiltrated an airship that my revenant here was powering before we met, but... where do you think anybody can go, when they get cornered on a hovering ship?

[ okay gonna be honest, they're a little distracted by that scenery so there's a slight delay. ]

... Nowhere, unless there are parachutes or an escape ship.

[sarkazm]

Right. It didn't have any of that. So when she had to escape--

She just jumped off.

Did she make it down safely?

[ who knows with your worlds of magic and ancestors in objects and whatnot. ]

Uh huh. See, I sewed a tracker into her jacket when she wasn't looking, to keep an eye on her. I had a heads up on where she was.

So I launched a few bombs up to offset her fall speed, Hoederer's Arts made sure the explosion didn't actually blow her to bits, and voila! Instant safety net.

[ they were about to be so confused about how bombs would help the situation but as soon as she says 'artes' they just go oh okay so magic. ]

She must have been extremely grateful! Making the leap would be so frightening. It was brave.

No way. She bitched about my stitches on the tracker pocket being shoddy.

It's how she is. I wouldn't have thanked her, either.
