It's what makes the most sense to me.

You are here to prove you are good people. This gives you opportunity to actively choose everyone's safety above your own desires.

Isn't it more like the opposite?

I know, I know, you also choose to do nothing and so on, but it's not like doing nothing with it changes anything!

Choosing to do nothing still has repercussions. In this case, the continued safety of others. Maintaining a positive status quo is still of value.

And if you have the opportunity to make a change, or to take an action that would harm others, not taking that opportunity is still a choice being made.
