Nah, I couldn't ask you to do that. You're always a guest, remember? [ they say this but they shift to rest the crate on a hip, rolling their shoulders back to stretch. ] It's just restocking anyway.
Is that how the saying goes? [ but alright, alright. ] Think you could hold this steady? Makes it easier to pull bottles out if I'm not holding the box at the same time, and then you can update me on the outside world of the week.
[ and he will...do that! he's not very strong, but he can at least hold the crate steady enough, smiling up (?) (iTS WEEK SIX I'VE NEVER ASKED?) at gabriel as he does. ]
As for the outside of the week... it is a magical world - there is an entire magical school, even. I must confess, I am feeling particularly spoiled, as of late!
[ thank you, taair, super helpful. also yeah i'll give you that, gabriel's a good couple of inches taller. but they do make quick work to lift several of the bottles at a time to start shelving them, lightening the weight of the crate a bit. ]
Magic, huh. [ a little bemusement. ] Sounds kind of interesting, I guess. I haven't been to a school in a while. What'd you find most interesting about it?
I would love to hear about your schooling sometime.
[ fondly. as for the rest! he looks thoughtful, watching them work. ]
For me...truly, all of it was fascinating. The larger picture - that those with magical talents are not scorned, but are carefully held in the hands of adults to be nourished and taught, and that it is a requirement to be educated...that was simply wonderful.
[ passion leaks into his voice as he talks, a sort of dreaminess to it. ]
I think society would be far better if people were able to have access to proper education. Knowledge and truth are power - it is one of the reasons why I write my book. It would not make a perfect society, by any means, but it would equip people with tools to think critically and learn of the world around them. Which... when it comes to magic, but when it comes to all things, is something we could desperately use, in Rodinia.
No you wouldn't. I don't want you to lose the idea that they're great places. I'm sure there's a lot of good schools out there.
... I do kind of like the idea that people with less potential are still treated the same. Teachers actually giving a shit about their students instead of writing them off as useless slackers. It's nice to think about. I wouldn't disagree. Knowing the truth is always for the better, even if the truth is bitter. I think... it's better to know than live in ignorance and find out the hard way when you can't reverse the damage. You're doing a pretty powerful thing yourself with your book. Kinda worries me when people just fall in line without questioning things, actually.
[ uuu the last part makes him really happy, and he nods, enthusiastic. actually all of it makes him happy. (it also makes me happy in my educator brain.) but really, gabriel hits it right on the mark. ]
Yes. Precisely that. It is my feeling that if I can bring the truth to even one person who needed to hear it, then... everything I have ever been through will be worth it.
[ soft, touched. around him, his thoughts briefly flutter into the image of a campfire in a cave, alit by the flickering glow. two soldiers dressed in maroon and black - an older captain and a bright eyed young guard, eagerly listening to someone speaking, mouths moving in silence, but with faces full of curiosity and joy.
... ]
... I have thought much upon the future lately, but I confess, I am still not sure what I will do.

[ taair says with a smile, and closes the distance between them to come help with the restocking. ]
Besides. Many hands make light work, yes? And light conversation makes work go a bit easier, or so I am told.

And you know I want that for you. For your life to have meant something in a way you're proud of.

Planning the future can be a scary thing, especially when you weren't even sure you'd get one. What options have you considered so far?
