That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me today. [ thanks taair, the opinion is valid no matter what. they finish making their drink and they lean against the counter, taking a sip to decide how to answer. ]
It's some idea of paradise, yeah. Nicer than most places I've been lately, but it almost feels like I don't belong here sometimes. But sure, I remember my life before. I can't say I miss it though.
[ there's a little crook of a smile on his face in response to that - i can't say i miss it though. also that's a shame they deserve more compliments? rude ]
I think I understand the feeling, some. [ though that's extremely complicated. ] Was it a dangerous life?

[ their body language is a little awkward, leaning a little further into the counter like they're adjusting their balance. and also like they want to disagree, but won't. ]
Sorry to hear that. [ because they can read between the lines here. ] It could be if you didn't know how to defend yourself. Most people learned early though. I'm... kind of glad for the chance to relax a little.
Right? Kinda doesn't match the whole picture. Think I'll skip the war for now. But...yeah. I think everybody wants to feel safe and secure, but there are a lot of people who don't get that. They might not get it until they die, but then you think about what their life was like before knowing that peace. It's understandable why people dream of a place like this.
[ mm. he falls quiet for a moment, looking down at the cup in his hand - considering the state of things at home, too. so many refugees who are desperate for a brief moment of peace. ]
Safety can be a cage in and of its own right. [ he says, though it's sort of distractedly, and taair then shakes his head. ] But I do find it quite interesting, how different people have seen or described 'paradise'.
And I find it even more exciting that there are so many different ways - and so many different things! People from the future - and even further future than that! People apparently travel to the stars. Isn't that just marvelous?
Don't I know it. [ this is mumbled under their breath, but they leave no room for discussion on that part. ]
That's the beauty of it, I guess. God decided you all can work for the same thing, but it doesn't have to be the same way because you're all different people. I've heard some stories from you guys already that was different than anything I've heard before. We have astronauts where I come from, but I've never been myself. It makes you think a lot about what's out there. So for you... what would count as paradise? And safety.
...Do you know what my greatest dream is, and has always been? It is not necessarily to finish my book, though that is very important to me. But... my greatest dream since I was a child has been to travel. To explore my country - the wide reaching Irian River, the majestic Vlder mountains - to travel with friends, up and down, from shore to shore. By day, we'd make our way across the land, and by night... we'd build a campfire, and sit around sharing food, drink, and stories.
I can think of nothing more sweet than that. The ability to achieve that dream - that would be freedom, for me.
[ the first thing they think is "you're writing a book?" and the next thing is probably more important, so they focus on that. the idea of being with people you get along with and spending time exploring together and seeing the world does sound nice. they have to admit that. ]
Having no agenda but your own, and having no metric of accomplishments but your own. Sounds like a pretty nice dream. Think it's attainable if you get back where you came from?
[ ME FORGETTING WHO I HAVE TOLD AND NOT TOLD THIS TO its fine
anyway. he considers the question for a long moment, now looking down at the drink in his hands again. though the smile stays, there's a twist to it. a hint of something heartbroken. ]
...No. No, it isn't.
[ but that's fine. he takes a long drink, and then - hiccups. baby doesn't drink much. ]
But, that's alright. It is what it is - there are other, far more important things that must be done.
[ this comes with a sigh. i decided i wasn't going to give lore and then i remembered there was drinking going on so he'll take the water, looking at them. ]
If I tell you, you must swear not to tell anyone... only one person has figured it out so far, and I'd like to keep it under wraps.
[ said with a little sigh, as he downs the last of his fancy drink. no more. ] Though my family has not been in power for some time, and all the better for it.
If it's for the better, and your family's out of power, then what's left for you to do? [ if it's so important. they also nudge the water closer again. ]

[ that is kind of nice, actually? taair gets it - he sips his drink, thinking for a moment about convallaria cakes and a nice summer's breeze. ]
It's a very distinctly human want, isn't it? For peace, even just for a fleeting moment.

You've let me ramble on about this for too long, friend - it is not a happy story to tell. Hardly worth lingering on.

Then next time you come by, trade me a better one. Even if I don't mind the less than happy ones.
