[ we are in ITALY!!! she is just walking along, turning to look every which way at all of the SIGHTS. even if there are no sights she's still like WOW A STREET CORNER!!! WOAH A BIT OF A PLANT!!!!!
she's not amazed or shocked by these things but sometimes you're just happy to be out and about. ]
Then, how wonderful for us that once again, we can explore it together! [ DELIGHT ] I've heard that there may be historical ruins here. Do you think that would be a fine spot for our weekly adventure?
[ its okay he thinks this is a fantastic exercise. ] A test of my analytical skills! I was thinking of going to the library to find a guidebook, but we could do that afterwards.
I've only been out to explore ruins when I was in Convallaria Town, and it was one of the greatest things I've ever been able to do. [ it is also the source of the "The Prince Disappears (Again)" cap. goodbye town hello ruins ] So... that I could do it here is an unbelievable blessing. I may not be an expert, but that would be the fun of it, wouldn't it?
Of preservation...? Of course it's important - it's necessary. Sometimes, ruins are the only remains of entire societies, and they are a valuable treasure trove of all sorts of information about the lives of the generations of people who came before. Plus, they provide primary sources for researchers in a variety of fields.
It's just something I've been thinking about. I was interested in your opinion.
[ ... ]
I don't know if I've mentioned this, but in my world, we're running out of space. Overpopulation, you could call it. We had a plan to create more storage, but it required land that's currently home to historic ruins.
[ now that is a conundrum. taair frowns, a hand coming up to his chin. ]
... Are there not other ways to preserve them? With all the technology you all have, surely you could document and photograph...? Perhaps even move it...? Unless it is the site itself of significance, not just the ruins that remain...
[ what if we just picked up bikini bottom and moved it over there ]
Even still. History is an important part of life, but if there is no life, there is no more history.
I suppose it would be possible to 3D scan them and create a simulation within the cloud. But that would be more to the benefit of my people than the embodied, and it's the embodied who want them preserved in physical form.
It holds cultural significance to them, but moving it isn't really an option. It's big, and besides that, the land does belong to them.
[ ah... his expression goes more sympathetic, frown deepening. ]
I see... the context helps, a touch. [ hmmm... ] So, the preservation of their way of life, and the loss of your people...what a difficult situation to be trapped in.
What has made it to the negotiation table so far, do you know...? Is there any route to compromise?

Is "just Italy" a place you are familiar with? It's beautiful - it reminds me of Rodinia, a bit.

I've never been there before personally. But it's a place that exists in the physical world.
