Some. But not all of them were men with delusions of divinity?

I think assuming they were all men is a little sexist. [ she shrugs ] Gods and the people who believe themselves to be gods are kind of two very different things.

[ROLLS EYE. just a little.]

And women with delusions of divinity, if it makes you happy. [rude?] Clearly. One has power, and the other has merely deluded themselves into thinking they do.

And women who are gods, too.

[ now she is being a little shit. anyway; ]

I think anyone with that kind of power doesn't show themselves so easily.

I imagine they have very little reason to. You made it sound as though you've met the real deal before, though. Even before your death.

Yeah. Though... that's a little complicated to explain.

Because it's a long story, or because it's hard to put into words?

Because it involves a lot of technology and you barely know what a phone is.

It is what it is. It's hard to believe that all this technology will become so commonplace in the future.

That's the thing with progress. It's not only inevitable, but it makes everything before feel obsolete. Technology is so ubiquitous in the future people don't care as much about the physical world.

... Sounds like it's to their detriment. How could you live, if not in the physical world?

Inside the machines. By the time I was fourteen, people had already started to download their brains inside a computer. It's a bit like... moving yourself, your soul, to another realm, I guess.

[ she does not look much older than fourteen ftr ]

[hmmmm dislike that]

That seems like a good way to ensure that humans one day go extinct.

... Yes and no? [ hm ] The idea was that in there, humans could live forever. And physically there were limits to who could be brought in. But honestly, I think you're right that it would've lead to the end of humanity as we know it eventually.

But they'd stay alive in computers.

You can always have back-ups. [ wry, but: ] When you guys send each other pictures on the phone, it creates a copy on your device. So that exists in both places. That's sort of how backups work.
